KAFKA IN CHINA, The People’s Republic of Corruption is the true story of attempted murder, torture, black jails, and fraudulent incarceration in a Shanghai mental hospital committed against the author as the result of a blurt-out to him about a large bribe allegedly paid by an iconic American company to Chinese officials. The fraudulent incarceration was accomplished with purported letters from the US Consulate General in Shanghai. The Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Joel Brinkley reported this case in depth in Politico and the San Francisco Chronicle in 2012.
The author is telling the complete story in the belief that Americans can best learn from an American what it means to be caught up in the Chinese Communist kleptocracy and thereby understand the plight of ordinary Chinese who are routinely brutalized by that regime, and further that it is unrealistic to think that China has adopted or to hope that it ever will adopt anything approximating Rule of Law under this regime.
This story also raises the following serious questions why has the State Department refused to answer whether the purported US Consulate General letters are genuine or forgeries; whether the State Department was complicit in what happened to the author; whether the State Department covered up any involvement; whether certain US media companies refused to cover this story in order to protect their own interests.

This is an intriguing and fascinating story. It reads like a novel. The author is extremely knowledgeable in Chinese culture and politics. I can't wait till the Part Two of the book comes out.
It was an okay book but I hated that I have to read part two. It should have been handled in a single book.
A gripping tale of today's China. Rothman gives riveting first hand account of his own experiences as an old China hand. The book provides a trenchant and eye-opening analysis of Chinese history over the fifty years that he has studied it and lived it. The denouement of his personal experience there chills us to the bone.
A Yale trained attorney, Mr. Rothman, Esq. shares his love of China and his disdain for the current Chinese Government. It's a personal story of political intrigue and how he got caught in a corrupt system. They tried to silence him for something of which he was not even aware! Rothman's memoir shows how vulnerable each of could be in a foreign land. With pictures and big print, this is a quick read... well worth the time.
Warren Rothman opens Kafka in China with a horrifying tale of his own poisoning and captivity. This Yale-educated lawyer worked and lived in China for years,mastering the language and negotiating a happy life in an ancient exotic country. But despite surface calm and exciting experiences, the undercurrent of corruption and sinister plots were not far enough away. This is the first of a trilogy planned by Rothman, and after the terror of his opening chapter, he spends the rest of the book detailing his life and the insidious appearance of evil forces. The book is an easy interesting read, despite where it is heading. It portrays a country emerging into a modern world without losing its stranglehold on the players.
An intensely personal tale that spins off into a surreal, oppressive horror worthy of its title. Yet, what left the strongest impression on me was the author's surprising love for confusing and deeply disorienting culture full of behind-the-scenes intrigue that swept him into what's every traveler's worst nightmare. Can't wait for the second book!
A General Counsel with a large Rolodex thought Warren Rothman was a good candidate to work in China as an Attorney and Consultant just as the country was opening its doors to Western businesses in 1980. Being fluent in Mandarin with three degrees from Yale including Chinese history as well as earning a law degree in 1970, he was practicing law in New York when he got the call. He took sometime to think it over and accepted the offer. Warren would shuttle between the States and China from 2000 to 2008.
Warren Rothman is honest about his thoughts, feelings, actions, and the analysis of some decisions he’s made. This book flows from his honesty which gives me trust in his observations. I enjoyed his stories whither he is walking in a park with a friend or sharing his love of Opera. I felt like I was there when he would point out something he admired of historical significance or enjoying the company of a family living in cramped quarters.
Rothman loved China. Many foreigners would just hang out in cities or solely with other Ex-Pats while Warren would enjoy going to a village and going up to strangers and starting a conversation knowing they could be apprehensive at first but he’d most likely win them over. They would trust him enough to laugh and let him take pictures of themselves. Many photo’s are in the book including a poker game and one of a family taking a stroll, simple stuff but it is nice to be reminded because in the back of your mind, darkness awaits. Rothman strives for truth of himself and the world around him while China, its history, government, and citizens are not conducive to this.
This book is part one and 125 pages, space is limited. Rothman does not go into much detail on the development of Chinese law and business practices. He did note that China often has “A committee, a sub committee and a sub-sub committee.” Rothman handles the translation very well; there are almost seven main characters which he give them abbreviations for instance names like YY, Mr. Z, Beijing Ayi and Shanghai Ayi. Rothman honors these people, but for readers like me, I would be lost trying to keep track of Chinese names. This is the first book I’ve ever read on China so my knowledge is limited; for readers who know China may value his experience, references and maybe of a time gone by. I know there will be a part two of this memoir and I plan to read it. I rate this book four stars.
